Even though she hasn't been in the spotlight as long as her big sis Jessica, Ashlee Simpson has been preparing for a career in entertainment since she was just a little kid. Ashlee started studying dance when she was only four years old, and at 11, became the youngest person ever admitted to the School of American Ballet. It wasn't long before she was dancing professionally, and it was Jessica who gave Ashlee her first big break. Ashlee became a part of Jessica's stage show, dancing in the background and supporting her sister. Simpson spent three years on tour supporting her sibling and garnering her own fan-base. But Ashlee was determined to break free from the shadow of her famous sis and in 2001 she did exactly that.

In 2001 Ashlee began acting, landing small roles in television shows and movies. She appeared on the big screen last year in the film The Hot Chick alongside Rob Schneider. She already has television appearances under her belt, including a guest-starring role on Malcolm In the Middle. She has also appeared alongside her sister on Saved By The Bell, The Donny & Marie Show, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, The View, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and a Disney Christmas show and concert special.

Ashlee's big break came in 2002 when she was cast as Simon Camden's love interest on 7th Heaven. While that role showed that Ashlee could act, it didn't change the fact that what she really wanted to do was sing. Later Ashlee played the character Cecilia on the television show from 2002 until the beginning of her singing career in 2004, at which point she said that she would no longer regularly play the role. Aside from contributing a song to the Freaky Friday soundtrack (which also featured tunes from Lindsay Lohan and Simple Plan), Ashlee didn't have much singing experience - though that didn't stop her from trying to launch a solo career.

In 2003, Geffen Records signed her to a music deal and Ashlee began working on her first album immediately. Because Jessica was having so much success with her show Newlyweds, Ashlee decided to go the reality TV route as well. Her series, called The Ashlee Simpson Show, premiered in June of 2004 on MTV and documented the entire process of making an album - from writing the songs to recording them. Show ran for eight weekly episodes from June 16 until August 4, 2004 and helped to establish recognition for her. When the album (called Autobiography) was finally released on July, 20, 2004, it went straight to number one - a feat that big sister Jessica Simpson has never been able to accomplish.

It debuted at number one in its first week, selling over 398,000 copies, and has remained at number one for three of the four weeks since its release. Her first single is the song "Pieces of Me", which she said was written about her then-boyfriend, Ryan Cabrera. Her planned second single is "Shadow", which is about living in the shadow of her sister's dreams and accomplishments. Ashlee's favorite song from her album is Undiscovered, which still makes her cry when she sings it.

Ashlee has a somewhat different, more rock-oriented image than that of her sister. Previously blonde like Jessica, she dyed her hair dark during the recording of the reality show, after she had finished filming for 7th Heaven (although she has said that the change of hair color was not intended to separate herself from Jessica), and her songs have rock elements absent from her sister's music. The biggest influence on Ashlee's look and music is No Doubt's Gwen Stefani.

At the 2004 Teen Choice Awards, held on August 8, 2004, Simpson received the "Song of the Summer" award for "Pieces of Me", as well as the "Fresh Face" award.

Currently living in Los Angeles, Simpson enjoys spending her free time vintage shopping, writing and recording music and hanging out with friends.
