The California Gurls singer picked up nods in most of the ceremony's biggest categories when the categories were announced on Wednesday (20Jul11).
She's up for Best Pop Video, Best Collaboration, Best Direction and Video of the Year for her explosive Firework promo.
British sensation Adele is close on her heels with seven nominations. She'll also compete for Video of the Year.
Matching Adele's seven nods is Kanye West, who is who is up for prizes including Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video. He also has two shots at the Best Collaboration award for his duets with Rihanna on Lights and Katy Perry's E.T.
Gaga, who stole the show at last year's (10) award show by turning up in that now notorious meat dress, is up for three trophies - the same amount as Beyonce. Gaga and Beyonce will battle it out in both the Best Female Video and Best Choreography categories, while they have also received nods for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography respectively. Rap newcomer Nicki Minaj is also aiming for a trio of awards.
Eminem is another main man on the nominations list, he will fight for three Moonmen trophies - Best Male Video, Best Direction and Best Cinematography - for his Rihanna collaboration Love The Way You Lie. Bruno Mars has four nominations, including Video of the Year, Best Pop Video and Best Male Video for Grenade.
Others battling for the revered Video of the Year prize include Beastie Boys (Make Some Noise) and Tyler, The Creator (Yonkers).
The ceremony will take place in New York on 28 August (11).
