2012 BET Awards: Whitney Houston Remembered in Emotional Tribute

Cissy Houston got a standing ovation after performing "Bridge
Over Troubled Water" during a tribute to her late daughter
Whitney.
Jay-Z, Kanye West, Beyonce and Chris Brown may have won top honors at the 2012 BET Awards, but the night belonged to the late Whitney Houston.

Houston's mother Cissy, a Grammy-winning powerhouse in her own right, performed a moving version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," saying, "This is for you, Nip," bringing many in the house to tears. In February, on the eve of the Grammy Awards, Houston drowned in a bathtub in the Beverly Hill Hotel after ingesting cocaine. She was 48.

Mariah Carey opened the tribute, saying that she was "captivated by the power in her range, the richness of her tone and her unique ability to wrap a lyric in emotion." She also light-heartedly referenced the supposed feud between the two divas, which ended (if it ever existed) when they worked on the "Prince of Egypt" soundtrack together: "We really got to know each other as people. Not divas "Ok", maybe occasionally it did get a little diva-ish, but that was just for laughs."

Monica performed "I Love the Lord," and Brandy went upbeat with "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." Houston's brother Gary performed "Where You Are" which led into Cissy Houston's performance, and Chaka Khan closed the tribute with a stirring "I'm Every Woman."

Houston's co-stars from "Waiting To Exhale" Lela Rochon, Loretta Devine and Angela Bassett also reminisced about Whitney Houston.
