So the winner of X Factor Season 1 does still exist. It’s been since the 2011 Pepsi Super Bowl commercial with Elton John that we’ve heard from Melanie Amaro, but tonight she majestically appeared on stage singing a new single titled “Long Distance.” While the 2o-year-old stood on a small platform way up towards the rafters, four back up singers accompanied her on stage. And all in all, it was a pretty decent performance (considering I had thought she took the 5-million dollars and ran away to the Caribbean). At the very least, Amaro’s performance was a nice change from the normal elimination of the first contestant straight out of the gate.
Which brings me to the first person who was eliminated from tonight’s show–CeCe Frey, finally. Bless her screaming, sassy, desperate heart. Frey’s mentor Demi Lovato was also eliminated from the competition now that she no longer has any remaining members in her Young Adult team. Unlike CeCe, however, who was booted off the stage immediately upon being eliminated, Mario Lopez announced that Demi will still play a part in the competition at the judge’s table. Hip hip hooray?
Next, based on votes from all over America, the Top 3 acts were announced one by one and in no particular order, beginning with bro band Emblem3, followed by 13-year-old Carly Rose Sonenclar and ending with country singer Tate Stevens. Left standing nervously on the stage and awaiting direction, were the two remaining acts Diamond White and Fifth Harmony, knowing that only one act will move forward in the competition.
Before the two bottom feeders could battle for the semi final positioning, pop superstar Kei$ha performed, debuting her new single “C’mon” from her upcoming album Warrior. The normally over-the-top artist seemed rather subdued tonight, but it’s possible that’s because she recently has been upstaged by her trashier twin sister CeCe Frey. I can only imagine the two united backstage in the green room to compare wardrobe notes. What an amazing parting gift mini-Ke$ha! You’re welcome.
To initiate the most intense song battle to date, Mario asked Simon to introduce his all girl group first. But like a three-year-old toddler in a summer swimming class, he tried to skip his turn. “Do I have to go first?” Cowell asked, whining. “I want to go second.” Most employees do what their bosses tell them, but apparently not Mario. Mostly still reeling in the high from his wedding over this past weekend, he stuck to his guns and continued to ask Simon for the introduction. Cowell eventually relented and Fifth Harmony took to the stage, singing “Anytime You Need A Friend” by Mariah Carey. For the first time ever, the girls actually harmonized as a group and delivered an impressive performance. It seems they each may be finding their place within the group, instead of each trying to sing over the other. Maybe there’s hope yet. Diamond White on the other hand, didn’t have the same kind of impact on stage.
She struggled (or at least seemed uncomfortable on stage) singing “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Wormack. Why White ultimately went with a country song for her final performance is beyond me. Perhaps she was hoping for some of Tate’s country luck to rub off on her, but it didn’t. With three judges voting to save Fifth Harmony, Diamond was finally sent home after spending two weeks in the bottom two. Tate, on the other hand, lucked out once again and reclaimed his #1 spot on the rankings list, closely followed by Carly Rose and Emblem3 respectively.
There are only two weeks of X Factor left this season! Be sure to tune into FOX Wednesday, December 12 at 8pm EST to watch the X Factor semi finals. One contestant is going to win a whopping 5-million dollar contract in the near future, and I still have my money on the amazing Carly Rose. Considering the two have traded the first place position a couple times now, it’s really anybody’s game (except obviously CeCe’s and Diamond’s). Do you think Tate stands a chance to beating Carly? And what mentor do you think is next to be eliminated?
