It's received a slew of withering criticism with art lovers branding it 'rotten', 'ghastly' and 'ordinary'.
And now some aspiring artists have lent a hand - and some Photoshop skills - to try and improve Kate Middleton's first official portrait - with mixed results.
While the Duchess of Cambridge is 'thrilled' with the results of her oil painting, praising it as 'amazing', some have been less than generous with their views.
The newly-commissioned portrait of Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, by artist Paul Emsley, has come under some fierce criticism

Some say the painting makes the pregnant 31-year-old look older than she is, while others claim the portrait by artist Paul Emsley makes her look more like she's grimacing than smiling.
'Ghastly ... rotten ... an out and out disaster,' was the view of the editor of the British Art Journal, Robin Simon.

'It’s only saving grace is that it’s not by Rolf Harris,' was the best that David Lee, now editor of The Jackdaw and a former editor of Art Review, could manage.
And renowned critic Brian Sewell described it as ‘sickening’, but the artist has won several prestigious awards including the 1997 BP Portrait Award.
Kate, on her first official outing for almost a month, was far more polite.

'It’s just amazing. Absolutely brilliant,' she told artist Emsley, when she met him at the National Portrait Gallery in central London, where the picture will hang.
But some artistic members of the public have rushed to 'improve' the oil painting, which shows the Duchess of Cambridge in a dark blue pussybow blouse.
The wife of Prince William has been given a variety of hysterical looks - which have gone viral.
In one portrait, the picture has been given a makeover with Celia Gimenez work.
Kate's face has been replaced with the 80-year-old grandmother's painting of Jesus - which many said resembled a 'monkey face'.
The well-meaning Spaniard ruined a 19th century fresco of Jesus in her botched attempt at restoring it with some handiwork of her own.

Surprise! After being criticised for making Kate look older than her years
Surprise! After being criticised for making Kate look older than her years, Photoshop has certainly turned back the clock on this spoof portrait.

Sadly, the Twilight films have come to a close
Sadly, the Twilight films have come to a close - but Kate's addition to the vampire story would certainly pull in fans.

Kate has been subjected to the smartphone FatBooth app in one picture.
The usually slender Royal is given a pair of huge cheeks, a massive double chin and looks like she's been eating for ten, rather than two.

The dark background, muted colours and the contrast of her pale skin against an atmospheric background has led some to compare her portrait to a Twilight poster.

Some pranksters decided that the 'eerie' nature of the portrait was too creepy for the refined and cheerful mother-to-be, and replaced Kate's face with a picture of Ghostbuster villain Vigo the Carpathian.
Another trickster decided to re-interpret the 'lifelike' nature of the portrait, and stuck a photo of the Duchess as a youngster, pulling a startled face on the picture.

Never one to shy away from a Twitter conversation, former MP Louise Mensch also couldn't help herself getting in on the joke - she re-Tweeted a crudely-drawn stick figure which joked that it was a version of the official portrait.

And Rowan Atkinson's character Mr Bean was also included in the viral sweeping the internet.
Photoshoppers morphed the slapstick character's gurning expression onto the long curled locks of the Duchess.

While someone else just decided that they could do better than the official, presenting a portrait that would make a seven-year-old proud - but at least they kept within the lines.

Emsley - known for his lifelike drawings - was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery and was chosen by its director Sandy Nairne following a selection process which involved Kate.

Duchess Kate Middleton photos
They did not necessarily know much about art, but they knew they did not like the way the Duchess of Cambridge looked in her new portrait.

“She looks like the head bouncer in a security firm,” one commenter posted on The Daily Telegraph’s Web site.

The painting, by Paul Emsley, was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery on Friday, and if nothing else, it successfully brought out the inner art critic in even non-art critics.

“I hate to be negative,” someone posted on The Guardian’s Web site, “but it’s really tragically awful.”

Mr. Emsley, who was commissioned by the gallery to produce the work, won the BP Portrait Award in 2007 for a painting of Michael Simpson, a fellow artist. The duchess, the former Kate Middleton, sat for him twice, and he continued painting from photographs he took.

The biggest complaint about the work, a head-and-shoulders portrait, is that it puts about 20 years, and possibly 20 pounds, on the duchess, who is 31 and as slender as they come (despite being pregnant). It is somewhat hazy, as if it were a photograph that had been heavily airbrushed to disguise the subject’s age wrinkles.

Alastair Adams, the president of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, told the BBC that the painting was admirably “straightforward and very pure.”

Unfortunately for Mr. Emsley, who is unlikely to produce work that generates this degree of interest anytime soon, most art critics begged to differ.

“It looks as if the painter asked the subject to ‘say cheese!’ and then told her to scram and buy some clothes while he painted the photograph,” David Lee, former editor of Art Review magazine, said in The Daily Mail. “It is perfectly adequate for the boardroom of a supermarket but entirely inadequate for a national collection.”

Waldemar Januszczak, the art critic for The Times of London, said it was the boring type of royal painting “we’ve been really churning out for the last few hundred years in Britain.”

In The Guardian, Charlotte Higgins said the painting made the duchess look undead, like a character in one of the “Twilight” movies. And the Daily Telegraph critic Mark Hudson compared the work to a “mawkish book illustration” that could have happily been used on the cover of a romance novel.

“If Kim Jong-un, supreme leader of North Korea, had a portrait painted of himself in a similar idiom, we’d all be crowing from the rafters about the pitiful taste of foreign despots,” he wrote.

The general feeling was that although the painting did not reach the same level of badness as the fresco of Jesus Christ that was disastrously restored by a churchgoer in Spain, it was no Mona Lisa. On the other hand, it provided a fine opportunity for the public to engage in one of its favorite activities: finding novel ways to ridicule things connected to the royal family.

“Sneering at royal portraits is part of British culture,” Mr. Hudson said, “and it might almost be that Mr. Emsley has sacrificed himself to allow that tradition to continue.”

Kate Middleton Scandal Family Business Cashing In On The Olympics
Kate Middleton’s family went under investigation for illegally cashing in on the 2012 Olympics Games through their party planning business.

The Duchess of Cambridge is no stranger to fashion buzz, but this time around, her family may embarrass Kate with a scandal.

No companies are allowed to make money off the 2012 London Olympics unless they are an official sponsor.

“In the UK, the commercial use of any of the Games’ Marks (or any other marks or logos that are confusingly similar to or likely to be mistaken for them), is only permitted with the authorization of Locog, which is generally only reserved for official sponsors and for licensees,” the organizers’ website states.

However, “Party Pieces,” a party planning business run by Kate’s family members Carole and Michael Middleton, has been offering Olympic themed items as a part of collection named ”Celebrate the Games.” The website sells over 100 Olympic-themed items, including a 16-ft. multi-country flag bunting, a ring-toss game in Olympic colors, and a wall-hanging stadium scene setter, according to TIME.

“There are no infringements and the products are fine,” an official from the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) said Thursday.

”We will ask them to make minor changes to some copy.’’
Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton recently wrote an article on blog “The Party Times,” encouraging readers to purchase "Party Pieces" products.

Pippa Middleton post the article titled “Celebrate the Games and Support Team GB” with links to several party trinkets.

”As for games-themed party favours,” Pippa Middleton wrote, “Union Jack ponchos and novelty glasses make a special change from the normal party bag treats to take home.”
If found guilty, Middleton family could be fined over $30,000.

£35,000 To Dress Kate Middleton For Just 5 Months
Princess Kate Middleton has splashed £35,000 on designer gear in just five months.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s wardrobe is looking decidedly more stylish as her clothing spending soars.

She famously went on honeymoon with Prince William, 30, last year in a bargain £49.99 dress from High Street chain Zara.

Just over a year later the 30-year-old beauty’s shopping tally has rocketed as she embraces high-end couture.

Prince Charles, who last year got a bumper £19million pay pot from his Duchy of Cornwall estate, is picking up the tab for his daughter-in-law.

Kate’s down-to-earth style has given the High Street a huge boost.

She loves brands worn by ordinary girls like Zara, Warehouse, Whistles, Reiss and L K Bennett. Anything she is pictured wearing sells out in minutes.

But recently her outfits have taken a more glamorous turn. Over the Jubilee weekend, Kate wore two £1,185 Alexander McQueen dresses.

In May she looked stunning in an aquamarine gown by Jenny Packham, who sells similar dresses for more than £2,000.

Other recent fashion triumphs included a figure-hugging £1,089 dress by Matthew Williamson and £1,320 split-to-the-thigh creation by Roland Mouret, 50. He said: “She’s a woman of her time.”

Kate refuses to take free clothes and always pays full price.

Stewart Parvin, the Queen’s favourite couturier, welcomed Kate’s transformation to Designer Duchess. He said: “She is looking fabulous.

“I understand with the way the economy is at the moment that she feels a needs to be seen in High Street clothes but I think people also want to see her in things that are slightly more unattainable.”

William, Kate & HarryGetting all dressed up for an important event, Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince Harry turned up at the Imperial War Museum in London, England on Monday evening (December 19).

The trio made the appearance to partake in The 2011 Sun Military Awards, which is held as a toast to the unsung military heroes hailing from Britain.

Aside from the glitzy event, Will and Kate recently learned that they'd raised over $1.5 million in one day for famine victims in East Africa by publicizing a Unicef appeal.

"The Duke and Duchess are delighted to hear of the overwhelming generosity of the British public,' said a spokesman. "They remain hugely concerned for the children still at risk, but view this as extremely welcome news."

Kate Middleton and Prince William: How the Royal Couple Is Just Like Prince William and Kate Middleton are the couple of the moment. Their every move is watched by the paparazzi. Their style is coveted and imitated. And, of course, their wedding this past April stole the hearts of romantics all over the world.

But the seemingly untouchable "super couple" is actually ... well, normal. Yes, Kate's "something borrowed" may have been the queen's Cartier tiara, and Will has grown up with the title of His Royal Highness. But some of their day-to-day habits are the same as the rest of us, like grocery shopping and setting up a new home. Here are some more:

1. They Travel Coach:

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge don't always need a private jet to get from A to B. Take last weekend's wedding between Will's cousin, Zara Phillips, and rugby player Mike Tindall in Scotland. According to the Daily Mail, Wills and Kate hopped on discount carrier FlyBe to travel home from Edinburgh. A one-way ticket with the low-cost airline runs for about $60, and the couple allegedly had to go through customary security checks like their fellow travelers. Will's brother, Prince Harry, also reportedly flew round trip to Scotland from London with another discount carrier, EasyJet.

2. They Repeat Outfits:

In the days of Facebook, even mere "commoners" balk at the prospect of an outfit repeat posted everywhere online. Not for the Duchess of Cambridge. At the same wedding in Edinburgh, she donned two outfits that had been previously worn and photographed; one during her recent U.S. visit and another for a 2006 wedding. Other famous repeats of the duchess include her L.K. Bennett nude pumps and the white Reiss dress she wore in her official engagement photos.

3. They Have Dates:

Last month, the couple was spotted on a date at the movies. Taking in a double feature of "Bridesmaids" and the latest "Harry Potter" flick near their Anglesey home, it was a Saturday night fit for any couple royal or not.

4. She Shuns Makeup Artists: Kate Middleton's smoky eyes at her April 29 wedding were courtesy of herself. After reportedly receiving bridal makeup training from makeup artist Arabella Preston, she executed the look on her own on the actual day. And after doing her own wedding day look, the Duchess kept it real in Canada and the U.S., putting her newly-acquired beauty tips to good use.

5. They Work on Their Birthdays:

Just a short time after his world-famous wedding, the Duke of Cambridge turned 29 like anyone else would at work. The Royal Air Force Helicopter Search and Rescue Pilot spent the day at a base in Anglesey, an island off the coast of Wales. He even went in anticipating the potential for a 24-hour workday.

So they have the jewels, they have the attention and they have the titles. But, it very well could be that behind it all, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge really are just Will and Kate, young and happy newlyweds who just happen to be royals.
