Michelle Rodriguez: I’m Quitting Acting
Take a good look at actress Michelle Rodriguez, because it could be one of the last times you see her in front of the camera before she quits acting. For the new Summer edition of Cosmopolitan for Latinas, the “Fast & Furious” star confessed she might just escape from the big screen, and begin a new moment in her career out of the public eye.

Next month, Michelle Rodriguez’s new film “Fast & Furious 6″ will hit theaters–but don’t expect to see the actress on the big screen again for a while.

“I’m about to say goodbye to acting for a minute and move behind the camera,” she tells Cosmopolitan for Latinas in its Summer 2013 issue. “I got into this business to write. I’ve waited 13 years to actually do it. Do you know how painful that is? It’s very painful.”

Rodriguez, 34, has been a Hollywood mainstay for years, starring in the “Resident Evil” franchise, the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and the ABC TV series “Lost.” But she’s also had a series of legal issues. In 2004, she pleaded no contest in L.A. to three traffic violations, including hit-and-run, drunken driving and driving with a suspended license, and the next year, after racking up a series of traffic violations, she was charged with drunk driving again. In 2007, she violated probation and was sentenced to jail time, but was released early in 2008 because of overcrowding.

“I had some bad moments. I partied hard. The world knew it,” she admits in the magazine, on stands April 30. “I feel like my growth is a progression. It’s like you’re about to fly out and head to Ibiza another year in a row and your gut’s telling you, ‘No, stay home and write.’ I go forward and I’ve had times when I go back.”
Rodriguez continues that last year, she had “a bad stretch,” because of her rebellious nature–but now she’s ready to focus on her career.

“That means I have to do the cutoff,” she says. “I’ll go into the mountains, and bye-bye everybody. Well, I’m a Cancer so…it’s in my nature to hide.”

Michelle Rodriguez Rain Resident EvilDuring our set visit in Toronto for Paul W.S. Anderson's upcoming sequel Resident Evil: Retribution, we had the opportunity to sit down and speak with the always refreshingly candid Michelle Rodriguez who was returning to the Resident Evil franchise for the first time in ten years.

Fans of the original film may remember that Rodriguez's character Rain wasn't one of the characters left standing at the conclusion of Resident Evil so we asked the actress to shed a little light on her return to the franchise, which turns out to be a bit complicated- she's actually playing two characters; "Good Rain" and "Bad Rain."

Say what? Turns out, the Umbrella Corporation are at it again with cloning, and during our interview with Rodriguez she discussed having to play two versions of the same character, her thoughts on her Resident Evil family, her future career plans outside of acting and more on her potential return to the Fast and Furious franchise.

Check out the highlights from our set visit interview with Rodriguez below and make sure to check back for more from Dread Central's recent set visit for Resident Evil: Retribution!

Q: How does it feel to be back for this installment after so much time?

A: I know! It's pretty damn cool- you've got to love sci-fi, man. For a long time I was kind of pissed off they kept on killing me off. I was like, "what am I doing wrong? Just because I'm not ripping off my clothes, how long do I have to endure this before people start appreciating me?" (laughs) And then they started bringing me back so I was like "cool."

Q: We talked to Oded Fehr a little bit earlier and he was saying how you're playing a dual role in this movie and how you're defying your usual roles and playing that up a bit. Can you talk more about that?

A: Yeah, that was fun. Well, basically Paul's original idea was that a UPS worker would be one of the clones and then we got together and we started to brainstorm and we came up with this juxtaposition of me playing a tomboy all the time and he said, "wouldn't it be nice to see you feminine, Michelle?" And I was like, "yes, that would be nice before it all wrinkles up and I can't use it anymore." So I figured I'd might as well do it. I threw on some high heels, added a nice little 'hippy twist' to the whole thing and before you know it, I'm driving a Prius in "zombieland." It was pretty cool.

Q: What are some of the challenges of oscillating back and forth between "Good Rain" and "Bad Rain"?

A: You know, I find it kind of fun because I've played the same character for so long that it's kind of like I am always an exaggerated version of my angry side. I'm so comfortable with her that it was kind of cool and fun to play something awkward and different- someone who is quirky and doesn't know how to handle a gun and someone who is curious. I kind of feel like an audience member while playing that character because I'm like "what the hell is going on here? Why are you dressed like a superhero? How come there are dead people walking around on the streets?"

Q: Nice. Did you play up the comedy at all?

A: A little bit. But I think it's more about how it plays up on the audience's perspective of what the character represents.

Q: What would you say the screen-time ratio is between "Good Rain" and "Bad Rain" then?

A: More "Bad Rain." She just gets more action- by a mile.

Q: So we’re essentially seeing the Raccoon Outbreak through your eyes in some respects.

A: In some respects, yes. For sure.

Q: I'm trying to piece together the plot.

A: Ha! Good luck! When I first sat down for lunch with Paul, I had absolutely no idea what the plot line was about. As soon as he came out with the clone thing, I was like "Duh! I can't believe I didn't think of that!" That's such a great, great way to bring back as many people as you want.

Q: Did you monitor the fan reaction at all? Because as soon as your name was attached to the project, the fan boards lit up. Did you kind of think "Holy shit, I was just in the first movie; I didn’t know Rain was going to be that significant of a character to the fans."

A: Yeah, I had absolutely no clue. I was completely psyched to hear that I was coming back and that the fans were down for it too.

Q: Coming back to the fifth one, after being away- what strikes you as the biggest differences between being on set for part one and for this one?

A: It has more of an action movie feel now. Back then, it was way more sci-fi. You could really feel the sci-fi; it was everywhere. (laughs) But now it's action- it just feels like an action movie and I think more so than any of the other movies. I think that's the direction Paul is wanting this to go in anyway. It's kind of cool.

Q: The enthusiasm hasn't seemed to wane over the last decade either.

A: You know what I think it is? I think it's that people love destroying mankind, for some strange reason. You make a movie about mankind's destruction, you're going to fill those seats. People just love the idea. For a couple thousand years now, we've been dreaming up how we're all going to disappear and fade away from this planet, so…

Q: Why do you think that is?

A: I think it's because people have a love/hate relationship with being human on this planet. (laughs) I know I do- I know that's why I love those kinds of movies.

Q: We get the idea that Alice (or Milla) is jumping around the globe a bit on this movie. Without getting into too much detail, what is the throughline for "Bad Rain" here?

A: I think for the most part she's pretty much being controlled completely by the Umbrella Corporation and I feel like the epitome of her existence is to protect and serve. She's very mechanical, very straight-forward and very matter-of-fact. There really isn't any human kind of sensibility behind "Bad Rain." She's just a machine.

Q: Does she face off with Alice?

A: Yeah, she just wants to take her down; that's the order she was given.

Q: We just saw you inject something into your neck onset-

A: Yes! Las Plagas! That makes me super-human. "Bullets? What are those? I eat bullets!" (laughs)

Q: What's your favorite power that happens from the injection?

A: Eating bullets! I have always wanted to eat bullets. I always had this really cool idea ever since I was a kid of a human being that was able to control all the elements they're made up of. For instance, we have minerals and stuff in our system and I always thought it would be cool to go into this deep state of meditation and be able to consolidate all the metal in your body and shoot through your fingers.

Q: How does the action in this compare to the stuff you've done on the Fast and the Furious movies and some of the other action films?

A: You get a lot more moves. You get a lot more action on this one, for sure. I think for the most part it's because everyone is Cujo and superhuman, kind of, so you get to do all this cool shit and get away with it. In the grand majority of the action movies I do, they give me some action but I don't usually get to have any of the real fun. Mostly the stunt doubles do all the cool stuff. I get the car, I get to hang out on top of the gas tanker at 20 MPH but my stunt double gets to do it at 40. She gets to have all the fun, I get to look like I did it.

Q: Are there any other film projects coming up that you're excited about?

A: Yeah, pretty much Fast and Furious is what I've got my sights set on for the next year and if "Res" does well, maybe I'll get to pop back in for the next one. Who knows- but the possibility is definitely there. And pretty much the same with Fast and Furious too. Basically, right now Hollywood is a giant factory of remakes because everyone is pussying out and they don't want to try anything new. They're scared, I guess and the money situation in the States isn't so keen right now. The dollar is shit right now so I can understand why the studios are doing the guaranteed hit-off movies; I'm banking on that and I'm proud to be part of such great franchises that want me back.

Q: When did you first hear that you were sort of an 'easter egg' in Fast Five?

A: That's been something that Vin's been pushing for, for a while now and it was just a matter of time before they buckled. You know what I mean? (laughs) He was like "I want my girl back" so eventually Neal (H. Moritz) said "she's a cool chick so let's bring her back." I was kind of surprised they buckled, but then again, with all the sequels you kind of run out of things to do. After a while, you're like "let's just bring some people back, why not?" (laughs).

Q: What did you think though- the fifth one is basically Ocean's Eleven, it's a heist- the most successful of all of them-

A: Yeah, I thought that was cool that they did that because it was like Ocean's Eleven with an urban, street-cred twist. Putting Vin and The Rock together was what did that. Also, people grew up with The Rock and people have now grown up watching the different Fast and the Furious movies so it's kind of part of teenage rebellion. The kids have all grown up now and it's got a following, a really loyal following.

Q: You said you were chasing Alice in this movie- is Jill your partner in crime as well?

A: Actually, Jill is my boss. She's basically the one who tells me what to do and I just do it, like a computer; I just register it and do it.

Q: I know you mentioned before you were thinking of writing a screenplay-

A: Working on all of that. I have a kids movie in the works too and these are all ideas I've had in my head ever since I was like 15 years old and I was like "I want to get into the business so I can write!" So then I became an actress and I got into trouble and grew up; then all the hard knocks knocked me down. Now, I'm a woman and time's running out so I better get to it. So I'm buckling down and the first script that is going to be completed is called Sedated and it's about drugs and the party world, which is something I know very well. (Laughs) It's basically about this guy who sells drugs in gummy bear form. It's a nice way to travel- you could ship it anywhere and not get into trouble. I hope I don't give anybody any ideas. (Laughs) I have to package things to be able to sell them.

It seems that the Resident Evil series is paying a little visit back to its roots. According to Bloody-Disgusting, Michelle Rodriguez will be returning as Rain Ocampo for Resident Evil: Retribution, as well as Shawn Roberts reprising his role of villain Albert Wesker, a fan-favorite.

Now those of you who have faithfully followed the entire series know that it’s a little strange for Rodriguez to return, considering was zombified and killed in the first Resident Evil film. But considering that Resident Evil: Retribution is planning to bring everything full circle, her role will most likely be a flashback, along with Colin Salmon once again playing the leader of the commandos in the first film, James “One” Shade.

Quick synopsis of Resident Evil: Retribution below:

Paul W.S. Anderson returns to direct Retribution which picks up right where Afterlife left off. K-Mart (Spencer Locke), Claire (Ali Larter) and brother Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) are captured by the Umbrella Corporation while the heroes must battle the Las Plagas variant of the infected, meaning the mindless zombies are replaced by stronger, scarier monsters. Sienna Guillory returns to play Jill Valentine who will now be featured as the film’s primary villain.

The series has rapidly grown to a big name franchise among fans, with Resident Evil: Afterlife being the current most successful installment and the only one so far to have implemented a shot-in-3D gore-fest. One thing that also made that fourth film so successful among the fans is that they were pleased to see actual usage of the elements and characters from the video game series, and it seems that Resident Evil: Retribution will continue that legacy by finally adding franchise favorite Leon Scott Kennedy. No word on who will be playing him, but rumors point to Supernatural front-man Jensen Ackles.

It seems like the series has finally found out that giving the fans want they want, putting elements from the popular gaming franchise onto the silver screen, is the way to box office happiness. After all, isn’t that a movie based on a video game should be all about?

Resident Evil: Retribution is set to release on September 14, 2012

Worse for wear? Michelle Rodriguez appeared to have overindulged as she left The VIP Room in Cannes, France, after a night of partying

There are parties left, right and centre during the Cannes Film Festival, with guests making the most of the nightlife in the city.

ut one star who appeared to have overindulged last night was Avatar star Michelle Rodriguez, who looked slightly worse for wear as she left a nightclub in the early hours of the morning.

Looking dishevelled and carrying her sky-high heels, which had clearly become too painful to wear after a long night of dancing, Michelle attempted to keep her head down and away from photographers even breaking into a run to avoid being snapped.

That's better: Michelle took her sky-high lace heels off and decided to carry them instead and go barefoot

However, the 32-year-old actress wasn't quite quick enough, and the nifty photographers managed to get a shot of her looking slightly worse for wear.

Michelle, who was wearing a stunning silk printed maxi dress, had enjoyed a night out partying at one of Cannes' most famous nightspots, The VIP Room, where Vanessa Hudgens also spent her evening.

Earlier in the day, Michelle demonstrated some impressive acrobatic diving skills, as she jumped off the cliffs near the Eden Roc resort.

Making a dash for it: Michelle was clearly keen to get home as she picked up her dress and ran through the streets

Looking svelte and stunning in a black bikini, she jumped and dived off the cliffs into the water alongside a group of friends.

She looked every inch the movie star with an ultra toned figure in her outfit, which appeared to consist of a type of skirt than the usual bikini bottoms.

Sizzling: Michelle Rodriguez showed off her trim figure in a black bikini in Cannes yesterday

Taking a dive: The actress enjoyed jumping off cliffs with friends at the French resort

At one point, she also swung across the water on a type of dangling rope ladder, her hair wet from the sea.

The star also watched, impressed, as one of her companions performed an elegant backflip off a diving board.

She also showed off her own skills as she executed a perfect dive of the blue board in the French sunshine.

The actress is in town for the Cannes Film Festival, but was clearly enjoying taking a break from  the red carpet.

Keep on swinging: Michelle took a ride across the water on a dangling rope ladder

She recently starred alongside Aaron Eckhart in Battle: Los Angeles, about an alien invasion in the city.

But she hopes creator James Cameron will involve her somehow, even if just inviting her to the set to watch filming. (Cameron has said characters who survived the first "get to be in the second film, at least in some form.")

He has hinted that the follow-up films could take place on another planet in the same solar system as Pandora, the forest in which the first took placMichelle Rodriguez 'Avatar 2' Will Be Set Underwatere. He has also brought up the possibility of involving the planet's oceans.
